Lead Software Engineer

The Goal is seeking a Sr. Software Engineer for our client in Charlottesville, VA.

Our client is seeking a Sr. Software Engineer to provide leadership on a team working with Big Data generated by IOT devices and a hosted cloud environment. The right candidate will have strong experience in software application design, application integration, database design, and hardware infrastructure design.

Your responsibilities would include:

  • Design, implement, and test n-tier enterprise web applications
  • Lead development of technologies and products as directed by the Software Manager
  • Define task breakdowns and effort estimates, as well as preparing design documents
  • Monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and update databases and web-based infrastructure
  • Provide technical direction and supervision to junior members of the development team
  • Write test plans, reports and briefings

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Preferably in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or equivalent)
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience, including comprehensive knowledge of software development and application architecture
  • Experience in the analysis, design and provision of hardware or virtual hardware to host multiple applications for multiple customers (in-house and 3rd party)
  • Demonstrated experience with the following:

o Experience with the Java Spring Platform and projects

o Experience with a modern Javascript framework

o Big Data projects


o Experience with modern databases such as MySQL/MS SQL Server or similar

o Familiarity with any modern web containers (i.e., Apache Tomcat, WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss, Jetty)

o Version control and software release using CVS, Git or equivalent

o Ability to work on Linux and Windows server environment

  • Excellent personal relationship building and listening skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a diverse interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time



  • Master’s degree or higher in Software Engineering, System Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with GIS solutions and integration of GIS services with other IT products
  • Experience in the analysis of interoperability of communications based SCADA systems
  • Experience with HTML5, IndexedDB and/or Web SQL
  • Experience with Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and/or SmartGWT
  • Experience with Commercial Cloud hosting services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Familiarity with Web Services (i.e., REST, SOAP)
  • Understanding of the Code of Federal Regulations related to rail safety in general and 49 CFR 236.1011 in particular to include extensive experience in the analysis of system operations for functional and regulatory compliance experience in the documentation and presentation of engineering or programmatic deficiencies to audiences with and without extensive technical backgrounds
  • Active in relevant professional organizations
