Java Application Architect

The Application Architect has the responsibility for design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of large scale financial application systems that meet the needs of the Office of Finance (“Office”) and contribute to its effectiveness. In addition, the incumbent must be prepared to serve as a technical leader within his or her area of expertise. The primary development environment is Java Enerprise Edition running within a JBoss application server on RedHat Enterprise Linux with a backing Sybase relational database system.


The incumbent serves a critical role in support of the Office’s function as the fiscal agent in the analysis, issuance and servicing of the System’s multi billion debt portfolio. The accuracy and the availability of the supporting application systems are critical to the successful operation of the Office.


  • Responsible for all phases of the application development life cycle in a corporate environment, including analysis, design, programming, testing, implementation and maintenance

  • Understand business processes of Fixed Income Securities.

  • Contributes to improved operations by developing and maintaining financial application systems that meet the needs of the Office using various techniques and technologies, including agile development.

  • Ability to work within the constraints of a planned project, ensuring appropriate level of productivity and teamwork to complete necessary milestones.

  • Develops and communicates application design and support documentation

  • Develops and maintains up-to-date end user documentation.

  • Effective support and training of application users by addressing and resolving application-related problems and issues in a timely and cordial manner.


  • BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years experience developing applications in a professional software development environment.

  • Demonstrated experience developing n-tier Java EE web-based applications deployed in a RHEL/JBoss environment.

  • Experience in the following tools required:

    • Integrated Development Environments: Eclipse and Maven

    • Source control systems: Subversion

    • Frameworks: Struts, Hibernate

    • Advanced SQL skills (Sybase preferred)

  • Experience in the following tools a plus:

    • ColdFusion development

    • Ability to develop UNIX or RHEL-based scripts

    • Configuring application servers such as JBoss and ColdFusion

  • Ability to apply object-oriented design and programming concepts, including design patterns.

  • Ability to quickly become a subject matter expert for critical business applications that support debt issuance and servicing.

  • Strong project management and problem solving skills

  • Superior written and oral communication skills to include demonstrated experience writing and / or editing procedures and documentation

  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment while continuing to progress on longer term project completion.

  • Working knowledge of financial services and mortgage industries, including related rules and regulations, is preferred.

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively with employee at all levels within an organization.
